Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Ugly Truth

ByPam

Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Ugly Truth by Jeff KinneyPumpkin and I watched the Diary of a Wimpy Kid movie and I laughed so hard! I loved the movie so much I did two things:

  1. watched it again with my husband
  2. bought the DVD

To be sure, I am very fond of children’s movies and also of watching and re-watching movies I love (Finding Nemo, anyone?). So it was no surprise when Pumpkin put the movie in my shopping cart one Target Tuesday.

But that’s not what this post is about.  This post is about the book series: Diary of a Wimpy Kid.  I believe there are approximately 5 books total in the series. The Ugly Truth is the fifth.  I jumped right into the story and laughed from Page One.

“It’s been almost two and a half weeks since me and my ex-best friend, Rowley Jefferson, had our big fight.  To be honest with you, I thought he would’ve come crawling back to me by now, but for some reason, that hasn’t happened.”

So…you know right there what kind of character you’re dealing with, dontcha?  Greg Heffley is not really a wimp.  He’s more of a kid with a big ego who likes to boss his ex-best friend around.  His perspective on life is rarely accurate and always funny.  Giggle out loud funny.  Greg wants to be accepted by the cool kids and has no idea how to go about it.  In his mind, though, everything he does is correct. Rowley, on the other hand, is a doll and you can’t help but cheer when you learn that he’s tired of being Greg’s sidekick.

Greg’s antics and his perspective will keep you laughing throughout the book.  The diary feel and the comic strip style illustrations are perfect.  While limited in multicultural characters, the lovable misfit Chirag Gupta, is even worse off socially than Greg.  I suppose if I delved deeper I could discuss why the Southeast  Asian character has to be the stereotypical nerd.  But that, my friends, will have to wait for another post.

Warning: if you don’t like sophomoric potty humor, you won’t like this book. But if you do…you’ll laugh out loud!

Yep, this is a four paws read if ever there was one!
