Isn’t the cover illustration adorbs? I LOVE THIS BOOK!
The reason I love this book is because the book is written in Spanish AND English! That’s right, it’s a bilingual book, yay!!! I love love love the opportunity to learn another language; kids are so quick to absorb languages through immersion and this book is perfect for young and (ahem) not so young learners.
The book opens with “Maria Had a Little Oveja”, which is “Mary had a little lamb” but if you didn’t know Spanish you could totally look at the illustrations and word in English for context clues. There’s a giant sheep in the illustration as well as the familiar rhymes in English.
The cuteness factor ratchets up with “Three Little Gatitos” (kittens) who lost their mitoncitos, ya know?  Then there are adaptations of rhymes you might be familiar with: like “Little Miss Amarilla” who sat in her silla eating her beans and arroz (beans and rice) who in the end screamed in a very loud voz.  Naturally there’s young Juan Ramon who sat en el rincon eating his green guacamole. Like one does, right?
Little Spanish speakers will love seeing their people and experiences mirrored for them in the playful illustrations and rhymes that everyone will enjoy. There’s even a glossary with pronunciations!
Multicultural Children’s Book Day 2017 (1/27/18) is in its 5th year and was founded by Valarie Budayr from Jump Into A Book and Mia Wenjen from PragmaticMom. Our mission is to raise awareness of the ongoing need to include kids’ books that celebrate diversity in home and school bookshelves while also working diligently to get more of these types of books into the hands of young readers, parents and educators.
