I’m going to the Grammys!

IMG_0349

Only in the metaphysical sense.

Did you ever wonder if any of the music

that gets nominated for Grammys come from books turned to movies?

I did. And I did some research. Here are my results. See if you recognize any of them.

Any of your favorite books make the cut?

Will you be watching the Grammys?

This #Blogust, Give your Little One a Chance to be a Princess or a Pirate

Blogust_Lockup_Horizontal

Does your little girl dream of being a Princess? Does your little guy fancy himself a pirate? Do they love to play dress up with their friends for parties?

So do I. In fact, when I’m not reviewing books, I host literature tea parties! We’ve done Fancy Nancy, Olivia, and so many Frozen parties I’ve lost track!  In August aka Blogust, we’re hosting a Fairy Tale party and the proceeds are going to go to [email protected]

Enchated Woodland.jpg.jpg

Why are we doing this? Because some kids don’t get vaccinated and as a result, they get sick and some even die. They never get a chance to dream about being princesses or knights or pirates or IronMan; and that makes me sad.  Why not have a party where everyone can dress up, play make believe and help other kids in the process?

It’s win-win, right?

Here’s the link if you’d like to attend the party or donate a ticket for someone:

Eventbrite - Enchanted Woodland Tea Party benefitting Shot@Life

This #Blogust, give a kid a chance to pretend to be a princess or a pirate. Give a kid a shot at life of being a kid.  For every comment or blog post shared at the [email protected] website, Walgreens will donate 1 vaccine.  1 comment = 1 vaccine.

How to Make Tea Party Crafts with Oriental Trading Company

As you know, when I’m not reading books, I’m hosting tea parties with my friend, Leah. Every good tea party MUST have a craft, next to tea, it’s the best part of a party!

Crafts Collage.jpg

We’ve hosted many parties and always turn to Oriental Trading Company to order the best crafts. Recently I realized that when I post photos of the parties, I always show the finished craft. I thought “Why don’t I make a video to show you just how easy it is to make a craft from Oriental Trading Company!”

With that in mind, I gathered some supplies, asked my friend Leah to help, and we made a series of how-to videos. Over the next few weeks, I’ll share more videos with you. Here’s the first:

I’ll admit I’m a little tired of the Frozen theme but the girls have so much fun it’s easy to get in the groove!

Did you check out that tiara? I picked it up for Leah at a thrift store. Now we BOTH have tiaras!

Have you ever hosted a Frozen party? Have I given you enough ideas to host your own?

Bookish Tea Party Fun: Behind the Scenes

Parties are fun, right? But there can’t be any fun if there isn’t any behind the scenes work. For me, planning is most of the fun. It’s like putting together a puzzle and making all the pieces fit. We’ve hosted perhaps 6 or 7 Frozen parties in the past few months. Here’s a little sneak peak at the food and how the puzzles all fit together.

Bookish Tea Party Fun: Frozen

I’d like to share with you during the month of May some of the best times that I have that you don’t know about. During the weekends I don a tutu and a tiara and act as the Tea Queen and host book themed tea parties!

Here’s one that was fun.

Pin the Nose Olaf

Do you recognize anyone in that photo? It’s Olaf, of course! We’re playing pin the nose on Olaf.  The kids are supposed to have their eyes closed.

They cheat.

Who cares?

FUN!

May is a Great Month for Tea Parties

It’s May! May is a month full of celebrations and birthdays and that can only mean one thing:

PARTIES!

What you don’t know about me is that when I’m not reading books or writing about books or selling books (I work in a bookstore: yes a librarian in a bookstore), I’m partying with books! Very very often on Saturdays and Sundays, I host tea parties at the bookstore.

Tea Parties

Here we are at our Frozen party set up. This is our latest birthday obsession: we’ve hosted at least 3 since March! Bookish tea parties are so much fun; we’ve been doing this for over a year now and they never cease to amaze me how fun they are. Girls AND boys love to dress up, play games, make crafts and drink tea. I even teach a bit of a manners lesson with each party.

Over the month of may I’ll be sharing some of the fun parties we’ve had. Hopefully it will inspire you to host your own bookish tea party!

My Thoughts on the Frozen Craze. I don’t get it!?!

FROZEN

FROZEN

It’s all the rage right now. You have to live under a rock to not have heard of it! My youngest is a teenager now so I’m kinda out of the loop with these kinds of things. Many of my friends, however, are crazy for it! Since I remember those days fondly of singing theme songs with my own little ones, I felt I needed to investigate and discover what all the fuss was about. As a side note, we have requests to host Frozen tea parties at the bookstore where I work.  Here’s a pic of one from a little while back.

Frozen

Isn’t it pretty?  So, I just HAD to know what all the fuss was about! After reading one of the books, here’s what I discovered:

  • Two sisters, who are PRINCESSES are orphaned
  • One of them has magic powers and hurts the other one
  • There is a snowman named Olaf
  • One becomes Queen but is unhappy
  • The other one falls in love but the guy is a jerk
  • The next guy she falls in love with tries to kill her sister with the magic powers
  • She steps in, saves her sister’s life and they all live happily ever after

Ok so I may have abbreviated just a bit. I was reading a Little Golden Book version which may have oversimplified the story. But here’s the question, do young girls need a love story?

I’m thinking back to every single fairy tale I’ve ever read and loved. The key to each story was find your Prince  Charming and your life will be instantly better.  And now that I have a teenaged girl (GAH!) I wonder if that’s the message I want planted in her brain.

I’m all for dressing up and feeling special and having a good time.  I’m just not sure that the message of finding your one true love still holds true in today’s society?

To be sure, Idina Menzel does rock as a singer.  I have yet to hear the song all the way through, but what I’ve heard is good.

What are your thoughts on Frozen? Am I off the mark? Overthinking? Too feminist thinking? A scrooge?  Tell me!
