The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern a Towne Book Center Book Club pick

ByPam

So tonight is Town Book Center & Cafe’s book club night. I’m so excited for many reasons, but mostly because I JUST NOW FINISHED the book. Woot!

The Night Circus

If you haven’t guessed by now, tonight’s book club pick is The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern.  And can I tell you I loved it?  Yes, I’m shocked; I thought I would hate it because I thought it was going to be scary and dark sort of like that Illusionist movie with what’s his name.

But anyway, it was none of those things and I’m glad I persisted and finished the book.  To be sure, there were a few moments of Ugh, I’m going to have nightmares, but I persevered nonetheless.  I”m glad I did.

What’s the story about? It’s not enough to say the story is about tow illusionist’s who belong to a circus and fall in love.  It’s all of that, but it’s also about magic and deception and reality and dreams and fun.  What’s more important to me is that there are quite a few multicultural main characters: Chandresh, is supposedly the son of some wealthy Indian something or other and Tsukiko, the tattooed lesbian contortionist of mysterious Asian descent.

I’d like to thank Morgenstern for making the story unusually interesting to keep my interest: just when I thought I’d figured out what she was doing, the story twisted into an equally pleasing option.  You can visit her at her website   or follow her on Twitter like I’m doing.  Also, check out her website for a brief but interesting book trailer.

One more thing; you know how with hardcover books you usually take the dust jacket off because it’s so unwieldy and slippery but you hate the way the plain book looks?  Not here. The naked book looks just as mysterious and I love it!

I give Night Circus 4 paws for Pluralism, yay!
