An Inheritance of Ashes by Leah Bobet
Here is another title that had me emotionally all over the place. I didn’t think I was going to like it, but I did. I couldn’t quite grasp what was wrong in the story but I knew the people were scared of something weird that had torn up the earth and that men had gone to fight for. The two sisters who always seem to be at odds are left to care for the farm they grew up in. A mysterious man comes into town and things go stranger than strange. An additional thing to like about the book was the diversity of characters. It seems there were people of Hispanic descent, Middle Eastern, LGBT representation, and Asian character. Both the male and female characters could fight, work hard and it didn’t not seem strange for them to do so. So while the ending was slightly anticlimactic for me the darkness and willingness to fight for their land intrigued me.
In fact, the story stayed with me for a few days after I finished it.
