I don’t know about you, but I was a kid in the 80s. Like most teens, I was concerned with school, extracurricular activities and friends. Never once was I worried about war, military occupation, or food rations. But that is exactly the childhood that Marjane Satrapi had. Fortunately for us, she’s written a memoir that is at once funny, shocking, and profound.

What I love about Satrapi is that although she’s super smart, she’s also still a kid. She wants to have fun and she wants to question the world around her, but in Tehran, many of the answers she’s given don’t make sense. As Satrapi grows up she learns to carry on even though her family is threatened because they’re Marxists.  Must read for all teens. Check that: older teens.

Naturally, this book has been on many banned book lists. Check out my post about banned books here. I can’t even with these banned books people. This is a great Diversity Reading Challenge pick!
