The Only Ones by Carola Dibbel
I LOVED this book so hard! Don’t let the renaissance-esque cover fool you. This is a young adult dystopian novel for thinkers. The extra bonus is that the main character is of Hispanic origin. So yay for Latinas! In the story, Inez lives in a post-apocalyptic New York. The world was beset by some strange viruses and many people died or are sick or afraid to get sick. Inez is somehow immune to disease and makes a living selling her reproductive parts. It takes a long time to figure out what they are talking about but when you figure it out?
You’re knocked over and lay twitching on the floor from the revelation! The story makes you think about illness, vaccinations, a woman’s right to her own body, reproductive issues and harvesting organs. It sounds like a lot and it is, but WOW. I loved it because it was so cutting edge I could almost picture these medical processes happening in the near future. Inez is BAD TO THE BONE for what she goes through to survive.
