Diversity Reading Challenge 2017:
What’s Missing from My List?

Like you, to be sure, I’ve been busy this year. I tried REAL hard to stick to the Diversity Reading Challenge. And with few exceptions I did. If you’re like me, then YAY!

What had happened tho…is that I may have narrowed my focus too much. And as a result I am missing a few titles from my list. I’ve read more books than what’s listed here, but these are the books that I feel best represent my Diversity Reading Challenge Choices.

Here’s what I’ve got so far:

African American young man: Ghost by Jason Reynolds

African American young woman: How Dare the Sun Rise: Memoirs of a War Child by Sandra Uwiringiyimana (did I tell you I met her?? AWESOME!!!!!)

Illustrator of Color: Ruth and the Green Book Floyd Cooper

Hispanic character on cover: I Got This by Laurie Hernandez

Asian character: Flying Lessons and Other Stories edited by Ellen Oh (this could count for multiple entries)

LGBTQ character: Simon and the Homosapien Agenda by Becky Albertelli

Muslim character: You Bring the Distant Near by Mitali Perkins (swooon)

So…what’s missing? Alot, I’m afraid.  I’ll need to get busy before the end of the year to get all my reading in! What’s missing is a character with a mental illness, a character with a physical disability, a Holocaust victim, a character on the Spectrum, and a graphic novel. LET’S GET BUSY!

How’s your reading going so far?

Hispanic: A Properly Unhaunted Place by William Alexander
Asian: Spirit Hunters by Ellen Oh
LGBTQ: Felix Yz by Lisa Bunker. Could also count for physical disability.
