Excuse Me My Brains Have Stepped Out by Pandora Poikilos is an interesting read. One part epistolary to the main characters’s father, one part WebMD documenting the diagnosis and treatment of the character with IHH, and one part life commentary.
Each part of the book was interesting but as a whole I couldn’t understand the flow of the story. To be sure, the diagnosis, treatment, and recovery of this rare disease would have been enough to sustain my interest. But adding in the other two aspects of the book was often confusing. I’m not sure why the protagonist in the story needed to be named Anya? Was this Dora’s way of separating herself from the story? Was this story real life or a fictionalized account of her life?
The life observations I found to be spot on. I enjoyed reading her perceptions of life and her analysis. Those observations are the kinds of things I like to read and comment on in people’s blog posts; I kept wishing there was a comment feature!
I read this kindle version while I was on vacation: it was a great addition to my collection.
